Card Consignment vs eBay: When Each One Actually Wins

Should you consign your sports cards or sell on eBay? Real fee math, time cost, buyer trust, and the exact threshold where consignment beats DIY.

eBay is fine for $50 commons. Consignment usually wins for anything over a few hundred dollars or anything that needs grading first. Here's the line we draw for clients at BlackJadedWolf, with the math behind it.

The real eBay cost

  • Final value fee: ~13.25% (sports cards category).
  • Payment processing: $0.30 + bundled into the 13.25%.
  • Promoted listings (effectively required for visibility): 2-12% on top.
  • Returns: 5-10% loss rate is normal on $500+ cards.
  • Your time: photography, listing, messages, packing, shipping, dispute handling.

Effective take-home on a $1,000 card sold on eBay with promoted at 4%: ~$827. Then deduct your time.

The real consignment cost

On a $1,000 sale through our consignment program: 15% commission, no buyer's premium, no listing fees, photography included = $850 to you. We handle every step, including returns.

Where eBay wins

  • Cards under $200 — fees are similar, but you keep cash same-day.
  • You already have 500+ feedback and an active store.
  • Bulk lots and commons that aren't worth grading.

Where consignment wins

  • Single cards over $500.
  • Anything that needs grading first — we grade and sell in one flow, see PSA grading cost.
  • You have a full collection to move and don't want to list 200 items yourself.
  • Buyer trust matters (a $5K raw card sells faster from a known shop than from a 12-feedback seller).

The threshold

For most clients, the breakeven is around $300-$500 per card. Below that, eBay's instant-cash benefit usually wins. Above it, the higher sale price and lower stress of consignment more than offset the commission.

What about Goldin or PWCC?

Major auction houses get higher hammers on $5K+ pieces and elite vintage. We cover the head-to-head in our consignment guide and our payout breakdown.
