When to pick PSA
- WOTC vintage in clear PSA-9 or PSA-10 condition.
- Charizard cards from any era — the PSA premium is brutal.
- Modern chase cards (Moonbreon, Umbreon VMAX Alt Art, special illustration rares) where PSA 10 still moves first.
- Cards you plan to hold long-term — PSA pop reports are deeper.
When to pick CGC
- Bulk submissions of modern holos and reverse holos.
- Japanese sets (CGC handles Japanese set IDs faster).
- You need slabs back in under 6 weeks.
- Sealed product (CGC has a much better sealed grading program).
- Cards likely to grade 9 or 9.5 — CGC's mid-grade resale is closer to PSA's.
The hidden math: 9.5 vs 10
CGC's 9.5 (NM/Mint+) sells for ~70-80% of a CGC 10. PSA has no 9.5 — it's straight 9 or 10, and a PSA 9 typically sells for 40-55% of a PSA 10. If your card is borderline, CGC protects your downside.
Cross-grading (CGC → PSA)
Some collectors crack CGC slabs and resubmit to PSA chasing the premium. The honest answer: it works on chase cards (the PSA 10 premium outweighs the second submission fee), and it's a money-loser on bulk.
