Value by grade, and why the curve is so steep
Vintage WOTC holos do not price linearly. The jump from PSA 8 to PSA 9 is meaningful; the jump from PSA 9 to PSA 10 is usually a multiple, not a percentage. Three structural reasons:
- Fossil centering. The 1999 English run drifts badly left-to-right. A large share of otherwise clean copies cap at PSA 8 on centering alone.
- Cosmos holo scuffing. Twenty-five years of binder pages and loose sleeves leave hairlines that only appear under a direct lamp.
- Black borders. Any handling shows as white flecking along the reverse edge, and graders are unforgiving about it.

Condition and authenticity checklist
- Set symbol and number. Fossil helmet symbol, 4/62 in the bottom-right. Anything else is a different printing.
- 1st Edition stamp. Left edge below the artwork. Genuine stamps are crisply printed, not embossed or inked on.
- Tilt test. Cosmos holo sparkle should travel beneath the gloss layer as the angle changes.
- Light test. Genuine WOTC stock blocks most light from a phone torch thanks to its opaque core layer.
- Centering measurement. Measure the yellow border on all four sides with a card ruler, not by eye. Eye estimates are consistently optimistic.
