About Vintage Pokémon Cards

Vintage Pokémon means the WOTC and early Japanese era, roughly 1996 through 2002. Supply here is genuinely finite: no vintage card is ever printed again, and every year a portion of the surviving population is damaged, played with, or lost. That is the entire long-term case for the category.

These print runs are hard on grades. WOTC stock drifts left-to-right in centering, black borders show whitening at the slightest edge wear, and the cosmos holo pattern scuffs. The result is that gem-mint populations stay tiny relative to how many copies were opened — which is why grade matters more here than anywhere else in Pokémon.

Japanese vintage is the quieter part of this shelf and often the better value. Japanese print quality in the same years was noticeably better centered, so a Japanese card in the same grade frequently costs less than its English equivalent despite being scarcer in absolute terms.

Vintage Pokémon Cards — Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a vintage Pokémon card?
Collectors generally mean the WOTC era and its Japanese counterparts — roughly 1996 to 2002, covering Base Set through the Neo and e-Card series. Anything after the Nintendo handover in 2003 is usually described as modern.
How do I verify the card before buying?
Every slab is sold in its original untampered holder with the certification number visible in the listing photos. Enter that number into the grader's public cert lookup and it returns the card, set, year, and grade on file.
How fast do Pokémon orders ship inside the US?
Orders placed before 2pm ET Monday–Friday ship the same business day from our Sayville, New York facility. Every card ships sleeved inside a graded-slab protector and a rigid mailer, fully tracked via UPS Ground at our flat $16 rate, with delivery typically 1-5 business days inside the United States.
