Vintage in Pokémon generally means the WOTC era and the printings that immediately followed it. Those runs are finished, the surviving population is fixed, and every year some share of the raw copies is damaged, lost, or graded low. Supply only moves one direction.

Because of that, grade scarcity matters more than it does on modern cards. A vintage holo in PSA 9 can be a hundred times scarcer than the same card in PSA 7, and the price reflects it. Read the population report before deciding which grade to buy.

Authentication is the other reason to buy slabbed. Trimming, recolouring, and outright counterfeits concentrate in vintage raw cards, and a graded holder removes that risk entirely.
